Emily is a founding partner of the firm of Coughlin Betke LLP. Her practice concentration includes over 25 years of broad-ranging civil litigation experience and trying cases on behalf of small & large businesses, healthcare providers, and insurers. Her extensive state and federal court trial experience includes cases involving construction-related litigation, employment liability, professional liability, products liability and premises litigation. Emily also has an established expertise in risk allocation and avoidance and has given numerous seminars on the intricacies of additional insured and contractual indemnification.

 

Emily has recently been named President of DRI - Lawyers Representing Business (DRI). With nearly 20,000 members, DRI is the leading organization of defense attorneys and in house counsel. Prior to her time on DRI's Executive Committee, Emily previously served a three year term as a National Director on the Board of Directors of DRI and as its Chair of Membership. 

Emily has received numerous honors and awards across the state and nationally. In 2018 she was named Massachusetts Top Women of Law by Lawyers Weekly. In 2017, she received the Massachusetts Defense Lawyer of the Year Award by the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association (MassDLA). Emily is also a Past President of the Massachusetts Defense Lawyers Association and served on its Board of Directors and held various officer positions beginning in 2002. She also completed a three year term on the Massachusetts Joint Bar Committee on Judicial Appointments, and on the Massachusetts Task Force on the Future of Peremptory Challenges. 

 

In addition to her work for DRI and MassDLA, Emily is also an active member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC). Membership to the IADC is by invitation only after extensive peer review. In 2015, she was selected and honored to serve on the prestigious IADC Trial Academy Faculty at Stanford University Law School, in which she taught trial skills to defense lawyers from across the country. She also served on several committees of the IADC, including as the IADC's Trial Techniques & Tactics Committee's Vice Chair of the Defense Counsel Journal. 

 

Emily is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA), "an honorary society of the best trial lawyers" on both sides bar. She is also a member of the esteemed, invitation only, Association of Defense Trial Attorneys (ADTA).   In 2013, Emily received DRI's Outstanding State Representative Award given to the State Representative who has "enhanced the public's view or role of the defense lawyer in the broader society." Emily has an AV© rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
